Citizens' Revolution, 2006 to 2015: The Rise of the Paradoxical State
The election of President Rafael Correa started to transform Ecuador from its weak state after the organizations bust to a better and stronger one. President Correa thought about the peoples needs and listened to what the people wanted. In one instance he doubled the payments to people with less money rather than giving it to the people with money, which resulted in an almost eight percent decrease in poverty in Ecuador from 2006 to 2011.
One of the consequences of President Correa's ways to put the people first was that he had to result to resource extraction. Although this was very disappointing I feel as though Correa did what he had to do to better Ecuadors economy. It was said that the amount of export increased by forty-two percent because they extraction exports are going to more people. The growing of resource extraction meant that they had less translational funding.
President Correa also instated environmental protection into the new constitution in 2008. The constitution protects water rights, does not allow genetically modified organisms and promotes buen vivir/sumak kawsay. The constitution says that nature or Pacha Mama has the rights and should be respected and maintained. Correa also tried to put the Yasuní ITT Initiative into play but failed. The intiative was basically to save Yasuní National Park from oil extraction by offering the National Park to be saved in exchange for the outside sources paying half of what the National Park is valued at.
